Dear Parents / Guardians of Grade 6 students,
Welcome to a new school year! All Grade 6 students take Music at Stephenville Middle School. The Music program explores many areas of music participation, the major ones being choral, ukulele and of course the recorder. There will be three Recorder Units of study, one per term. The first Recorder Unit will start September 13th. All students are required to bring their own recorder to music class during these units of study.
Please note that the Department of Education did supply each student with their own recorder in grade four. If your son or daughter no longer has that recorder, he or she will need a new one. There are a few used recorders that I keep in my music room for students to borrow in class, but it is impossible to completely sanitize them. Each student should have their own recorder not just for academic purposes, but also for health reasons.
The school has good quality recorders for sale at the office for $8.00. If you choose to buy a recorder elsewhere, please be sure it has German fingering as opposed to English / Baroque fingering. You can tell by looking at the back of the recorder where you will see either the letter G (for German), E (for English) or B (for Baroque).
Finally, all grade 6 students are required to bring a duo-tang folder to music class to keep their own copies of music and handouts. The folder will remain in the class all year. This folder is separate from the Band binder.
Please feel free to contact me at the school (643 - 5101) if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Paul Harris,
Music teacher
